KPA Architects has celebrated over 40 years in business.
Ken Paterson decided he wanted to be an architect at the young age of 12. He studied architecture at the University of New South Wales from 1961 to 1965 and graduated in 1966. His career began in 1964 working as a retail architect for Westfield Development Corporation in Caltex House in Sydney for Frank Lowy.
Ken worked in Sydney and London before coming to Perth in 1969 where he began working for the well-established practice of W.G. Bennett Allen & Allen, becoming a partner in 1972. From the skills and knowledge he had gained over the years and abroad he decided in 1974, at the age of 31, to branch out and set up his own practice of Ken Paterson Architects (KPA) at 11 Howard Street, Perth. Although Ken knew this would be a gamble, he had the belief that providing good service and working closely and honestly with Clients that KPA would prosper.
From 1984 the evolution as a retail architectural specialist began when KPA joined developer Stuart Cooksey. The Newman Boulevard Shopping Centre was KPA’s first project with Stuart and from that retail projects in Busselton, Port Hedland, Esperance and Bunbury followed on. This then lead to KPA’s team developing larger metropolitan shopping centres such as Innaloo and Mirrabooka.
Todd Paterson, Ken’s son, started working at KPA in 1998 where he began as a student. In 2010 Todd took over the business as Ken began retiring. Todd’s motivation and leadership during his short time as Director at KPA has led the practice to evolve and expand. Todd has shown tremendous foresight and determination by adding retirement and aged care projects to KPA’s portfolio and skill base, whilst continuing to reinforce KPA’s retail profile. His continued involvement in a multitude of industry committees strengthens the practice and ensures KPA is at the forefront of the architectural profession. Under Todd’s leadership KPA Architects is set to leap into its next four decades of excellence.
A good team works together to provide design solutions to the day to day problems generated by projects, large and small.
