Open House Perth 2017

Open House was founded by a number of Architects in the UK in 1992 who were trying to promote the value of good design.  What started with a small architectural event is now a world-wide phenomenon that includes over 30 cities.

Open House Perth began in 2011 and is a great chance to show off some of Western Australia’s (WA) best buildings.  Whether it is a home, office, tower, church or religious space the Open House Volunteers have been there opening doors to some of the most exciting designs around; and some of WA’s best historical sites too. Open House Perth is purely supported by generous sponsors and local Architects and Designers, all who enable the organisers to open the doors to Perth’s best design spaces each year. Open House Perth has been privileged to welcome around 220,000 visitors to Open House destinations since the first event in 2012.

KPA’s own Daniela Sawade got involved this year and volunteered as a tour guide at The Goods Shed in Claremont.  Built in the mid-1880s, The Goods Shed is part of Claremont Station’s original infrastructure and was very respectfully renovated, only a few years ago by the cultural organisation FORM, to now represent a collective creative project space, coffee hang-out, and exhibition and learning facility. Respectfully and imaginatively restored with many original features intact, this old freight shed now functions as Perth’s newest cultural hub, and has also won the Heritage Award in the 2017 Australian Institute of Architects WA Architecture Awards.

Artists on residency with FORM were also working in the space over the Open House weekend, giving visitors an opportunity to learn more about FORM and its work across regional Western Australia.
