Singleton Village Shopping Centre

The Singleton Village Shopping Centre is a new development consisting of a Woolworths Supermarket, BWS, medical centre, cafe and other specialty tenancies.

The architectural concept of the development was derived from the local beaches to give the centre a family and community feel. The feature surfboards will be a beacon along Mandurah Road, making the development stand out to attract shoppers and families alike. Feature timber beams and soft colours echo the beach and ocean, whilst giving the development a contemporary aesthetic.

Vasse Shopping Centre

The new Vasse Shopping Centre and petrol station, situated in the village centre of Vasse Estate in South West WA, have been granted Development Approval based on KPA’s design and documentation for Coles Property Group.

The local area provided inspiration in abundance, with architectural influences taken from the Busselton beach and jetty area, the iconic modern winery architecture of the South West region, organic rural/vineyard elements, the adjacent Busselton to Flinders Bay Rail Trail and traditional main street architectural style.  The intended result was an eclectic, village-style aesthetic, serving as an anchor and catalyst for future development along the main street, enhancing amenity for locals and providing a destination for visitors to the greater area.

Wattle Grove Shopping Centre

The proposal was for a “Neighbourhood Centre” that comprised of a supermarket, liquor store, specialty shops and a pharmacy.

The site backs onto the Woodlupine Brook Drain and is adjacent to a future public open space. The built form addresses these areas, as well as the street, by means of landscaped pedestrian access, activation of shopfronts and adjacent parking. The building fabric was designed to complement the direction of the Shire’s ‘Wattle Grove Village Centre’ master plan and the selected colour palette reflects the local vernacular in accordance with the Shire’s planning requirements.

Waterhall Shopping Centre

Waterhall Shopping Centre is a new retail development located in South Guildford consisting of a supermarket, specialty shops, medical centre and community tenancy with associated car parking and services.

Recognising the existing heritage surrounds, the project captures traditional brick construction and architecture in a contemporary way. With an art component to the project, the artwork is based on the surrounding trees of the site to further enhance its heritage surroundings.

The Mezz Mount Hawthorn

This innovative refurbishment of the original Mount Hawthorn Shopping Centre includes special features such as an internal street to the shopping centre, enhancing the existing café strip culture.

The refurbishment works included modern new facades and entry statements, as well as new mall finishes and amenities. New specialty shops were established under the level of a new deck parking area.

The original open-air parking has been redeveloped into a multi-level undercroft and deck parking facility, significantly increasing amenity for patrons and improving potential income for tenants. All works were undertaken during continuous trading, minimising disruption for patrons and tenants.

The project has received a number of award nominations including; shortlisted for the 2008 National Property Council of Australia Pitney Bowes Mapinfo Award for Shopping Centres, a nomination for the 2008 RAIA WA Architecture Awards, Category 5—Commercial Architecture and was the winner of two Property Council of Australia Awards for Excellence in Retail Marketing.

The sketch design, to DA stage was undertaken by James Christou + Partners Architects. KPA took on the project from working drawing stage until completion.

Secret Harbour Shopping Centre

Secret Harbour Shopping Centre is located approximately one hour south of Perth in a relatively new beachside residential development.

It is bounded by Oasis Drive, Secret Harbour Road and Warnbro Sound Avenue, with space for further expansion in the future.

This project was the first stage of the development, based on a site master plan originally prepared by KPA. Stage 1 consisted of a Woolworths Supermarket of 3,800m2 and 14 Specialty Shops totalling 1,820m2. The Tavern, the design of which was not done by KPA, was not part of this development and was added later. The project is a steel framed building with concrete tilt panels and glazed shopfronts. The concrete panels have had decorative mouldings applied to help achieve its distinctive appearance, with a colour palette inspired by the local coastal environment.

This centre was one of the first designed by KPA involving the popular main street concept and when fully developed will contain a row of shops fronting Oasis Drive. After KPA had successfully obtained Development Approval for the project, construction was undertaken by the Doric Group on a Design and Construct basis and KPA became the Consulting Architects for this phase of the project.

Miami Plaza Shopping Centre

Miami Plaza is located on Old Coast Road, Falcon, in Western Australia’s South West.

As part of the strategic plan, KPA was involved in the overall design of the site which, when completed, contained new access roads to enable easy access to the centre, the installation of traffic lights on Old Coast Road and the creation of a number of fast food outlets also fronting Old Coast Road.

Following the preparation of the strategic plan, KPA designed the Shopping Centre, including a Woolworths Supermarket and 17 specialty shops, as well as a medical suite. KPA was the Project Architect for this development from sketch design stage, until the completion of the construction phase. The architectural design incorporated Colorbond roofs to the entry statements and verandahs, and the incorporation of timber look panelling to the external facades. The design intent was to reduce the overall scale of the development, resulting in a laid back, beachside aesthetic, typical of a holiday town or seaside village.

The site for a Shopping Centre wrapped around an existing Liquor Store building which was retained in the development and due to the high water table in the area some interesting drainage solutions were employed to contain the stormwater, away from the existing building.

Broome Boulevard Stage Two

Set in the sub-tropical tourist destination of Broome, this project was the second stage of the refreshingly spacious Broome Boulevard Shopping Centre.

KPA’s scope included a new Target Discount Department Store as well as specialty shops, extended mall and a grand new entry statement, to make Broome Boulevard the main shopping centre for the local area. The car park was expanded to over 700 cars and the access to the centre was made easy by the installation of a new roundabout off Frederick Street.

This project was a return to the construction methods utilised by KPA in its work during the 1980’s and 90’s on shopping centres in the North West. Design for cyclonic conditions, heavy rainfall and flooding were necessary architectural considerations. The design for the extension was required to address the iconic ‘Broome Style’ of architecture. Although in stark contrast to the materials and construction methods normally used for shopping centres, a pitched roof with feature gables, lattice and custom-orb cladding were included, complementing the Stage 1 design. The mall interior included origami-inspired raking ceilings, which are flooded with natural light through skylights, taking full advantage of the beautiful local weather.

In addition, KPA and QPM (Quality Project Management) were involved with a ‘Broome Style’ Woolworths Petrol Station, adjacent to the shopping centre.

Stargate Kelmscott

The works at Stargate Shopping Centre in Kelmscott began as proposed additions and alterations to an existing neighbourhood centre and throughout the course of the project the scope expanded to include one new restaurant pad site and later, one new retail pad site.

The original dated facades and entries were replaced with crisp new parapets and modern blade-style entry statements. A corner of the building was removed to create a sundrenched alfresco area, surrounded by lush landscaping. The resurfacing of the existing car park and the establishment of secure staff parking have increased amenity for patrons and employees alike. To address the low ceilings and darkness in the existing malls, three new skylights were added. A combination of natural light and new designer fittings now illuminate the new curved bulkheads and the realigned, retiled malls. The two new pad site buildings are located on a prominent corner of the site, on Albany Highway and create a ‘main street’ presence.

The works to both the building and the car park were staged to allow for continued trading, even throughout the installation of the large new skylight structures directly outside the Coles and IGA Supermarkets. Continued trading and the delivery of significant cost benefits were enabled by the substantial reuse of the existing building.
